Evaluating sources is going to be one of the most important
steps in the research process because it is the factual basis of your entire
project. Peer-reviewed and scholarly articles are of high value because their credibility
can be accounted for. Sources must contain a significant amount of evidence to
prove why they are worthy of use. A lack of evidence backing the statements
probably is a sign that there is no evidence and the credibility should
questioned. If the author is well known it is probably safe to say the source
is a good one versus an unknown author or publisher you might look twice at.
The dates of the sources and information collected should be considered because
you do not want out dated information others may know to be no longer correct.
Information such as this may make a reader stop reading completely. The source
should presented in a logical and comprehendible manner to establish it’s
worthiness. I have notice particularly in websites and online sources that the
relevance and credibility should be examined a bit more than a book or
magazine. There are too many fake and fluffed articles out there to persuade people
in one way or another.

Chapter 3
My research question as I see it right now is going
to be a Why. Why aren’t veterans getting the proper treatment and why isn’t it
available in a timely manner. This is just a sample question but it will be
something similar to this with the understanding that it may change throughout
my research. This is a hot issue and there are many different answers to these
questions and my job is to weed about the best one to present in my research
paper. I will collect things such as information, history, assumptions, rumors,
and confirmed documentation. I will answer my research question with a theory
of my own at the beginning and end of my entire research process and judge how
the two answers vary. My research question will be narrowed to a few samples of
information collected that present a logical and understandable answer. My goal
is to answer this problem/question for all of those who are seeking the answer.
My research proposal should be fairly easy to complete now that I have
collected over 20 credible sorts and dozens of other bits of information to
complete this research paper. Completing the annotated bibliography is going to
help this process along greatly.

Plagiarism is something that should be very clearly covered
in any course before beginning a writing project. I will ensure any information
directly taken from a source is in quotations and properly cited on the works cited
page. Paraphrasing must done in a manner that differs from what the source says
and is stated in your own words. Highly regarding the basic research ethics
will keep you in the lines of remaining credible and not breaking any rules. I
will be accurately and fairly presenting the information and citing it in the
proper format. If there is any question in whether to obtain permission or not
for the use of a source I will be consulting my instructor and/or the Copyright
Act of 1976 documentation to determine procedure. Any notes I take from a text
I will ensure to include the source name, title, or website and its author so
that I can easily refer back to it. My drafting process will help determine all
of my own information and where to insert sources I am using to where it makes
the most sense. If there is any question as to whether or not my writing would
be considered plagiarizing I will immediately stop and bring it the attention
of my instructor.
Chapter 8
Chapter 8
Planning and preparing for your search of sources is very important because you want to have a wide variety of options. I am going to compile a list of maybe 20 keywords to search for in different combinations in order to find multiple credible sources. I will also use a Boolean search using these combinations in variation to collect data. The VA and veterans benefits and services and the quality of those have recently been in the news so I can use database that focus on newspapers and weekly magazines as well. Government publications and documents will be of great use also. I plan to stay away from broad internet search engines because a lot of the information I am finding is not true nor credible. Searching an author from a source I have already determined to be credible through Google or Yahoo is a much more viable option. The book addresses using social network as an option of searching for information. I highly disagree with this because they are so many fake and outrageous articles that have no sources or credibility what so ever. Video and documentary from personal experience is something that would be useful to me as well.

Chapter 6
Organization and compiling of sources and information is
going to be huge for me. Generally I don’t do well with keeping an organized
drive of information for my research paper. This chapter is helpful in finding
ways to organize and keep record of all your important information that is
going to generate your research paper. I own a removable hard drive so all of
my sources, documentation, and the physical paper will be stored on it. I will
also be saving a back up version on a home laptop hard drive. I will be sure to
include dates on all saved documents and note their worthiness to be used.
Sometimes at work I have a few minutes to browse the internet to find
additional sources for my paper so I will be utilizing email to ensure I can
find those sources later for the writing process. I will be directly quoting
most of my sources to avoid any confusion or paraphrasing that’s technically
not paraphrasing. Some of the sources are quite long so a self summarization
will be something I conduct normally to shorten the length down and I will
ensure to cite the work properly. I will be using multiple sources from
multiple templates not just websites to ensure a variety of credible and
useable documents.
Chapter 4
Chapter 4
This chapter covers a variety of ways to evaluate a
particular source you are considering for your research project. There is a
great difference between reading critically and evaluating a source. The two differ because reading something
critically is digging much deeper into the source and weighing its value and
what information it contains while the evaluation process is simply determining
if the source is credible and meets your needs. When critically reading a
source I will be sure to keep my research question at the front of my mind.
America’s support or non-support of the military. My position on the statement
is America should continually support their military and offer as many services
to them for their sacrifice. I will be using a multitude of evidence and
analysis to generate my argument. Empirical evidence and trend/data analysis
will help me build a strong case for what should be offered in exchange for the
military service. Firsthand accounts from veterans will probably be my best
source as they were on the front lines and now have gone through the transition
back to civilian life. Trends and data will be used to measure cases of
military members becoming depressed, having PTSD, and being jobless after the
military.

Research Paper Sources
I believe my selected topic is going to be America's support of the military.
My first source is going to be Americanmilitarysupport.com. Seeing how this site is dedicated to this topic I find it credible but I continued to explore the site. I found not a ton of information about supporting the military but I did find the organization mission statement "To provide quality support services to our heroic United States military service men and women in a professional and ethical manner. To ensure the trust, confidence, and respect from country that gratefully contributes to the bravery and dedication of all United States military service men and women." This sites lack of information however is a concern. My other two sources will have to contain a lot more information.
My second source is going to be Military.com. This site has an entire section dedicated to military support called "Supporting our Troops". It covers ways to support a military member or veteran such as "Adopt a Soldier, Operation Gratitude" and so on. It covers many ways of supporting the military's efforts with links of different programs, counseling, and organizations. It also has an open blog/comments section where people can say something to show their appreciation.
My third source is going to be the opposite of the first two. I want to find a source that show's American's disagreement and lack of respect for the military who protects it. The source will be Antiwar.com. This site covers every countries current and past events including America through 1000's of articles disagreeing with the use of our military and how it should be disbanded.

Chapter 1
Chapter 2
In this first chapter I really got a grasp of the basic
concepts of writing a research paper. At this point with the amount of research
papers I have written I don't really think too much of what is involved in
actually writing it I just do it. The nice thing about this chapter is
actually breaks down the different parts of the paper and its process. After
selecting a topic you must take a position based on your beliefs or thoughts
and begin the research process to back that up. Topic selection is very important
because you don’t want to just choose any old topic. You want to select a topic
that has meaning to you that you may not know everything about, this is the
purpose of the research. Personally in the past I’ve really overlooked a lot of
these ways to construct your paper and just began drafting and researching all
at once. This resulted in a few subpar papers. Having solid sources you’re a citing
is very important because you want all of your information to be as credible as
possible. I found the project timeline to be the most interesting part of the
chapter because it breaks down every phase of the paper and allows you to set
your own deadlines for each.
Chapter 2
The second chapter covers ways to explore into your chosen
topic. There are many more ways to research your topic than just the conventional
internet research. Simply discussing your topics with peers and recording their
thoughts and observations can give you a different perspective. Conducting
field interviews or surveys are also great ways to accomplish this. Finding an
issue or many issues with your topic can also provide the different views that others
have on it and help you really decide your approach on the subject. Research through
plain old books, newspapers, and magazines are also great ways. These contains
tons of information that most people don’t know even exists. Evaluating the creditability
of a source is important because you don’t want just junk information or
clearly incorrect statements in your paper. Interesting information is key in
pulling the reader into your paper, if you’ve got just boring filler facts and
information readers quickly become disengaged. I found in previous papers that the
research process will test just how loyal and interested in the topic you are.
If you’re falling asleep reading an article on the topic then it’s probably not
the right one and you need to chose something else.
